Dishwasher Maintenance: Simple Steps to Keep Your Machine Happy

If your dishwasher is making strange noises or not drying dishes, a little upkeep can often fix it. Regular care stops tiny problems from becoming big, costly repairs. Below are the everyday habits and occasional deep‑clean tricks that keep your dishwasher running like new.

Everyday Care

First, rinse off large food bits before you load a rack. A stray piece of pasta can clog the spray arms and slow down cleaning. Use the utensil holder for forks and spoons – they tumble better and don’t block water flow.

Check the filter once a week. Most dishwashers have a removable screen at the bottom; pull it out, rinse under warm water, and wipe away grease. A clean filter ensures water circulates properly and reduces foul smells.

Run a hot rinse cycle with an empty machine once a month. Heat helps dissolve mineral buildup and kills lingering bacteria. Simply select the hottest setting and let the dishwasher do its thing.

Don’t overload. Overpacked racks restrict water jets, leaving dishes spotty. Follow the manufacturer’s loading guide – larger items go on the bottom, smaller pieces on the top. This tiny adjustment boosts cleaning performance.

Deep Cleaning & Troubleshooting

For tougher grime, place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run a full hot cycle. The vinegar breaks down limescale and removes buildup from the interior walls.

If you notice a film on glasses, sprinkle a tablespoon of baking soda on the bottom of the tub and run another hot cycle. Baking soda neutralises acid residues and leaves dishes sparkling.

Inspect the spray arms for blocked holes. Remove the arms (usually by snapping them off), rinse under running water, and use a toothpick to clear any debris. Re‑attach and you’ll hear a stronger spray.

Check the door seal for cracks or mold. Wipe it with a damp cloth and a touch of vinegar. A damaged seal can cause leaks and lower cleaning efficiency – replace it if you see tears.

Listen for a humming sound that never stops. That can mean the pump is clogged. Turn off the power, locate the pump (often under the filter), and remove any foreign objects.

When a dishwasher won’t start, first ensure the power cord is firmly plugged in and the circuit breaker is on. Next, look at the door latch – if it’s loose, the machine won’t run. A simple adjustment can solve the issue.

Finally, know when to call a pro. If you’ve tried cleaning the filter, spray arms, and seals but still have error codes or persistent leaks, a qualified technician can diagnose electrical faults or replace worn parts safely.

By doing these quick checks each week and a deeper clean every few months, you’ll avoid most breakdowns and extend your dishwasher’s life for years. A well‑maintained machine saves water, energy, and money – and leaves your dishes spotless every time.
