Electric Hob Maintenance: Simple Tips to Keep Your Cooktop Working

Got an electric hob that’s starting to look a bit tired? You don’t need a pricey engineer for most everyday issues. A few minutes of regular care can keep the burners heating evenly, stop odd noises, and extend the life of your whole unit.

Everyday Cleaning and Care

First things first – always unplug the hob or switch off the circuit breaker before you start any cleaning. A wet hand on a live surface is a fast track to a shock.

Wipe the surface with a soft, damp cloth and a mild dish soap. Avoid abrasive pads; they’ll scratch the glass and make stains harder to remove. For stubborn burnt‑on food, soak a cloth in warm, soapy water and lay it over the area for 10‑15 minutes – the heat will loosen the residue without harsh chemicals.

Never spray cleaner directly onto the cooktop. Spray onto a cloth, then wipe. This stops liquid from seeping into the control panel or under the heating elements.

After each use, give the hob a quick wipe‑down. It prevents grease build‑up, which can cause uneven heating and funky smells later on.

Common Faults and How to Fix Them

**Burner won’t heat** – Check the power supply first. A tripped breaker or a loose plug is often the culprit. If power’s fine, look at the heating element. A cracked or blackened element usually needs replacing. You can order a matching part online; installing it is usually just a matter of unscrewing the old one and snapping the new one in place.

**Uneven heating** – This is usually caused by food residue or a mis‑aligned element. Remove the element (most models lift out easily), clean it with a non‑abrasive sponge, and reseat it properly. Make sure the element sits flush with the hob surface.

**Error codes flashing** – Modern hobs show codes when a sensor is off. Look up the code in your user manual; most are simple to reset by turning the hob off for a minute, then back on. If the code persists, the sensor may be faulty and should be checked by a professional.

**Control panel unresponsive** – Moisture can creep into the buttons. Let the hob dry completely – leave it unplugged for a few hours. If the panel still won’t work, it might be a loose connection inside, which is best left to an electrician.

**Noise or buzzing** – A humming sound is normal, but rattling usually means something’s loose. Tighten any visible screws around the burner area. If the noise comes from inside the unit, it could be a faulty fan or transformer – call an expert.

Remember, safety first. If you ever feel unsure about opening the hob or handling electrical parts, phone a qualified electrician. A quick professional call can save you from a bigger repair bill later.

With a little routine cleaning, a regular visual check, and a fast response to any odd behaviour, your electric hob will keep heating your meals reliably for years. Keep these steps in mind, and you’ll avoid most common hiccups without breaking the bank.
