Dryer Maintenance Tips: Keep Your Dryer Working Like New

If your dryer takes forever to dry a load or makes weird noises, it’s probably asking for a little TLC. A clean dryer not only saves energy but also stops lint fires before they start. Below are the everyday steps you can do in ten minutes or less to keep your dryer humming.

Clean the lint filter after every load

The lint filter is the first line of defense. Pull it out, brush off the lint, and give it a quick rinse with warm water if it looks greasy. Let it dry completely before you slide it back. A clogged filter forces the dryer to work harder, spikes your electricity bill, and can overheat the drum.

Check the vent and ductwork regularly

Every few months, disconnect the dryer from the wall and pull the vent hose away from the back. Use a vent brush or a long flexible vacuum attachment to remove lint that’s built up inside the hose. Make sure the outdoor vent flap opens freely – a stuck flap can trap hot air and cause scorching. If you notice a burnt smell, stop the dryer and clean the vent right away.

Next, give the drum and door seal a quick wipe. Damp cloth with a little mild soap will lift dust and fabric fuzz that can slip onto clothes. Avoid harsh chemicals – they can damage the drum’s finish and the seal’s rubber.

Don’t forget the dryer’s belt and rollers. If you hear a squealing or thumping noise, pull the dryer apart (unplug first!) and inspect the belt for cracks. Rollers should spin freely; any resistance means they need cleaning or replacement. Most belts and rollers cost under £20 and can be swapped in half an hour.

Finally, level the dryer. An uneven unit makes the drum wobble, leading to extra wear on bearings. Use a spirit level on the dryer base and adjust the feet until it sits flat. This quick tweak can cut down noise and extend the motor’s life.

Putting these habits into a monthly routine means your dryer stays efficient, quiet, and safe. You’ll notice shorter drying times, lower energy bills, and fewer service calls. And if something odd shows up – a smell, a shake, or a stop‑mid‑cycle – stop using it and call a pro. A fast professional fix is cheaper than a full‑blown fire or a broken drum.
