Gas Leaks: Spot Them Fast and Stay Safe

Smelling something like rotten eggs? That’s not a bad cooking experiment – it could be a gas leak. Gas leaks aren’t just an annoyance; they’re a real danger that can lead to fires, explosions, or health problems. The good news? Most leaks are easy to catch early if you know what to look for and how to react.

Common Signs of a Gas Leak

First thing you’ll notice is the smell. Natural gas is odorised with a sulfur‑like scent so you can tell when it’s escaping. Besides that, listen for a hissing sound near your stove, boiler, or any pipe. If you feel a sudden headache, dizziness, or nausea without another reason, that could be a low‑level leak affecting your air.

Don’t forget to check your appliances. A pilot light that keeps flickering, a burner that won’t stay lit, or an oven that won’t heat can all be warning signs. Also, look at the yard – a dead patch of grass or wilting plants around a buried line might mean gas is seeping into the soil.

What to Do If You Smell Gas

Stay calm and act fast. Open windows and doors right away to let fresh air in. Don’t turn on lights, use your phone’s flashlight, or spark anything nearby. Even a tiny spark can ignite the gas.

Leave the house immediately with everyone else, especially kids and pets. Once you’re safe outside, call the gas supplier’s emergency line – they’re on 24/7. If the leak is near a stove or cooker, you can also shut the main gas valve, usually found near the meter.

When the professionals arrive, let them do their job. They’ll use detectors and pressure tests to find the exact spot. If you own a rental, inform your landlord too – they’re responsible for fixing the pipe.

After the leak is fixed, it’s a good idea to have a full safety check. A qualified engineer will inspect all gas‑powered appliances, the boiler, and any piping. Regular maintenance can spot wear and corrosion before it becomes a leak.

At Nuneaton Appliance Repair Experts we’ve dealt with countless gas‑related issues, from faulty hob burners to hidden pipe cracks. Our certified engineers can diagnose a leak, repair it, and give you a safety certificate so you know your home is back to normal.

Remember, prevention is cheaper than emergency bills. Schedule a yearly service for your boiler, get your hobs checked if they’re older than ten years, and replace any cracked hoses on portable gas appliances.

In short: trust your nose, act quickly, and call the pros. A gas leak isn’t something to ignore, but with the right steps you can protect your family and keep your home running smoothly.
