Stove Problems – Identify & Fix Common Issues Fast

If your stove isn’t heating, burners are flickering, or the oven stays cool, you’re probably wondering what’s wrong. The good news is many issues are easy to spot and fix yourself. Below are the most common stove problems, simple checks you can do, and the signs that it’s time to call an expert.

Why Your Stove Might Not Be Working

First, think about the type of stove you have – electric or gas. Electric stoves rely on heating elements and a good power connection. If the element is broken or the outlet is faulty, the burner won’t get hot. Gas stoves need a steady gas supply, a working igniter, and clean burners. A clogged burner or a weak spark can stop the flame from lighting.

Another frequent culprit is the control knob. Over‑time, knobs can wear out, causing the stove to think it’s on when it isn’t. Also, the thermostat in an oven can go out of range, making the temperature stay low even though the oven thinks it’s heating.

Quick Checks Before Calling a Pro

Start with the power. For electric stoves, plug the unit into a different outlet or test the outlet with another appliance. If the outlet works, the problem is likely the heating element. Look for visible cracks or a burnt smell. You can also use a multimeter – set it to resistance mode and test the element. If the reading is infinite, the element is dead and needs replacing.

For gas stoves, turn the knob to the “ignition” position and listen for a clicking sound. If you don’t hear it, the igniter may be dirty or faulty. Clean the igniter tip with a soft brush and a bit of vinegar. If the spark still won’t appear, the igniter coil might need a swap.

Check the burners themselves. Food debris, grease, or rust can block the gas flow. Remove the burner caps and wash them in warm, soapy water. Dry them thoroughly before re‑installing. While you’re at it, inspect the venturi tubes – the small holes that mix gas and air. If they’re clogged, use a pin to clear them gently.

Lastly, examine the oven temperature sensor. If the oven gets hot but the temperature display is wrong, the sensor could be misreading. Remove the sensor, wipe any residue, and reconnect. If the oven still reads incorrectly, the sensor may need a replacement.

If after these steps the stove still misbehaves, it’s time to get a professional. Gas leaks, electrical faults, or damaged internal components are dangerous to handle yourself. A qualified technician can test the gas pressure, replace faulty wiring, or order the correct parts.

Remember, regular maintenance helps prevent most stove problems. Wipe down burners after each use, keep the area around the stove clean, and run a quick self‑check every few months. With a little attention, your stove will stay reliable and you’ll avoid costly repairs.
