Common Fan Issues and Easy Fixes for Your Home Extractor Fan

Extractor fans keep kitchens and bathrooms fresh, but they can act up just like any other appliance. Whether the fan whines, won’t start, or blows weak air, the cause is usually something you can check yourself before calling a pro.

Why Your Fan Is Making Noise

Most noisy fans have dirty blades or a loose mounting. Over time, grease and dust coat the fan blades, unbalancing them and creating a humming or rattling sound. A quick turn‑off, remove the cover, and give the blades a wipe with a damp cloth. If the fan still squeaks, tighten the screws that hold the motor housing to the duct – a loose mount lets the motor vibrate against the ceiling.

When the Fan Won’t Turn On

First, check the power source. Many fans are wired to a wall switch, but some pull power from a bathroom light circuit. Flip the switch, test the outlet with a lamp, and make sure the circuit breaker isn’t tripped. If the fan gets power but stays still, the motor capacitor is the usual suspect. Swapping a cheap replacement capacitor (often labeled 5‑10 µF) often brings the motor back to life.

Another common reason for a dead fan is a blocked vent. Dust, hair, and even small items can clog the duct, making the motor overheat and shut off. Disconnect the fan, detach the duct, and blow out any debris with a shop‑vac. Re‑attach and test – a clear path restores airflow instantly.

If you’ve checked power, cleared the duct, and the fan still won’t spin, the motor itself may be burned out. In that case, replacement is cheaper than a full service call, especially for standard 80‑mm bathroom fans that sell for under £30.

Finally, don’t ignore odd smells. A burning odor means the motor windings are overheating – turn the fan off immediately, unplug it, and replace the motor. A lingering musty smell usually points to mould inside the housing; a thorough cleaning with a mild detergent and drying the unit resolves it.

In most households, these simple checks fix the majority of fan problems. Keep a small screwdriver, a soft brush, and a spare capacitor handy, and you’ll save time and money. If the issue persists after these steps, it’s time to call a qualified electrician or a local repair service – especially for fans wired into a hard‑wired circuit. With a little routine maintenance, your extractor fan will stay quiet, strong, and reliable for years.
