Unblock Extractor Fan – Quick and Easy Guide

If your kitchen or bathroom fan is humming but not moving air, it’s probably blocked. A clogged fan reduces ventilation, creates damp smells, and can waste electricity. The good news? Most blockages are easy to fix with a few tools and a little patience.

Common Reasons Fans Get Blocked

Dust, grease, and hair are the usual suspects. Over time they settle on the fan blades and in the ductwork, forming a thick layer that stops airflow. In bathrooms, soap scum and mould can build up, while kitchen fans often suffer from cooking oil splatter. Occasionally a piece of debris – like a loose plaster chip – can fall into the vent and block it completely.

Another hidden cause is a damaged or misaligned duct. If the duct bends sharply or the seal loosens, air gets trapped and the fan appears to be blocked even though the blades are clean.

Step‑by‑Step: Unblocking Your Extractor Fan

1. Gather your tools. You’ll need a screwdriver (usually Phillips), a soft brush or old toothbrush, a vacuum with a narrow nozzle, a damp cloth, and a ladder or sturdy step stool if the fan is high.

2. Turn off the power. For safety, switch off the circuit at the fuse box or unplug the fan if it has a plug. Even if you only plan to clean, a stray spark can cause injury.

3. Remove the cover. Most extractor fans have a grille held by screws or clips. Unscrew or pop it off and set the screws aside.

4. Clear the visible grime. Use the brush to scrape off dust, grease, and hair from the fan blades and the inside of the cover. A vacuum nozzle works well for pulling loose debris out of the duct opening.

5. Clean the duct. If you can see down the duct, gently wipe the walls with a damp cloth. For longer ducts, a flexible brush (available at DIY stores) can be pushed in to loosen buildup.

6. Re‑assemble and test. Put the cover back, tighten the screws, restore power, and switch the fan on. You should feel a stronger airflow. If the fan still sounds weak, repeat the cleaning or check for a tighter duct seal.

7. When to call a pro. If you notice rusted blades, a noisy motor, or the fan still doesn’t work after cleaning, it’s time to call a qualified electrician or ventilation specialist. Trying to fix a motor issue yourself can be dangerous.

Regular maintenance makes future blockages less likely. Wipe the fan cover once a month, run the fan for a few minutes after a shower or cooking session, and inspect the duct annually for signs of wear.

By following these simple steps you can keep your extractor fan humming efficiently, improve indoor air quality, and avoid costly service calls. A clean fan is a happy fan – and a fresh home for you.
